The Winnipeg Jets have added a seasoned player to their roster, securing Gustav Nyquist with a one-year contract valued at $3.25 million. The Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club officially announced the agreement, bringing the 35-year-old forward into the fold.

Nyquist is a Swedish winger with a wealth of experience, boasting over 800 NHL games played throughout his career. Drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the fourth round of the 2008 NHL Draft, he has since played for the San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, and Minnesota Wild. Throughout his NHL career, Nyquist has accumulated 531 points (209 goals, 322 assists) and 210 penalty minutes in 863 games. He has also participated in 83 playoff games, where he recorded 30 points (6 goals, 24 assists) and 18 penalty minutes.

Last season, Nyquist split his time between the Nashville Predators and the Minnesota Wild, appearing in 79 games and recording 28 points, with 11 goals and 17 assists. He was traded to the Wild by the Predators for a 2026 second-round draft pick on March 1. Nyquist also played in six playoff games for Minnesota but did not register any points.

Nyquist is known for his hockey IQ, puck-handling skills, and two-way play. He is capable of playing on either wing and can contribute to both the power play and penalty kill. The Jets hope he will bring a veteran presence to the team. His ability to play in all situations makes him a valuable asset, particularly for the Jets as they aim to remain competitive in the Central Division.

The signing of Nyquist reflects the Jets' strategy to strengthen their forward depth with experienced and versatile players. He is expected to provide leadership to the team's younger wingers, including Cole Perfetti, Nikita Chibrikov, and Brad Lambert, all of whom are anticipated to take on larger roles in the upcoming season.

From a salary cap perspective, the $3.25 million average annual value (AAV) represents a reasonable investment for a player with Nyquist's track record. This move provides Head Coach Scott Arniel with increased flexibility when constructing his forward lines for the 2025–26 season. While this signing may not be the high-profile acquisition some fans were hoping for, especially given the uncertainty surrounding Nikolaj Ehlers' future, it is nonetheless a solid addition to the Jets' roster. If Nyquist can maintain his health and rediscover his previous form, he has the potential to be a valuable contributor during a playoff run.
