At the close of play on Day 1 of the second Test at Edgbaston, India finds themselves in a promising position, having reached 310/5 against England. Shubman Gill led the charge with a masterful, unbeaten century, his second consecutive as captain, demonstrating both grit and elegance at the crease. Ravindra Jadeja provided solid support and remained not out.

Winning the toss, England's captain Ben Stokes opted to bowl first. This decision perhaps stemmed from Edgbaston's reputation as a ground where chasing teams have found success in recent Tests. However, India navigated the initial challenges posed by England's bowlers to build a substantial score. India made three changes to their lineup, bringing in Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Akash Deep.

Early in the day, England's bowlers, particularly Chris Woakes, applied pressure. Woakes ended the day as the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets for 59 runs. Brydon Carse also chipped in with a wicket. However, India managed to weather the storm. Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed a robust 87 before falling to a loose shot off Stokes. KL Rahul fell early, managing just 2 runs. Karun Nair added 31 before being dismissed. Rishabh Pant scored 25. Debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy had a brief stint, scoring just 1 run.

Gill's innings was the cornerstone of India's batting performance. He displayed remarkable composure, reaching his century with a delicate sweep off Joe Root. Jadeja's contribution of 41 not out was also valuable, as he and Gill combined for an unbroken 99-run stand. This partnership helped India recover after a mini-collapse that saw them slip from 182/2 to 211/5.

Former England pacer Steven Finn noted the shorter boundary distances at Edgbaston, suggesting it could be a factor influenced by England's "Bazball" approach. Gill, however, capitalized on the dimensions, finding the boundary with regularity.

Looking ahead to Day 2, India will aim to build on their solid foundation. The weather forecast suggests a pleasant day with a mixture of sunshine and clouds, ideal for batting. Gill and Jadeja will be key to India's hopes of posting a formidable total, potentially exceeding 500, to put pressure on England's batting lineup. England, on the other hand, will be keen to make early breakthroughs and disrupt India's momentum.
