André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, the younger brother of Liverpool star Diogo Jota, tragically passed away alongside his brother in a car accident in Spain on July 3, 2025. He was 25 years old.

Born on April 28, 2000, in Gondomar, Portugal, André was also a professional footballer. He played as an attacking midfielder for FC Penafiel in the Portuguese second tier league. He could also play as a left winger or center-forward. Silva had been with Penafiel since 2020 and had become a regular player for the team, which finished 11th in the league in the most recent campaign.

Before joining Penafiel, André began his youth career with Gondomar SC before moving to FC Porto at a similar level. His market value was €450,000 as of June 23, 2025.

While his older brother Diogo Jota gained international recognition playing for Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, André played in the domestic setup in Portugal. Despite not having the same level of fame as his brother, André was considered a promising footballer.

Diogo and André shared a close bond. Diogo often shared pictures of them together on vacations and during training sessions. The two brothers had recently celebrated Diogo's wedding in Sanabria just ten days before the tragic accident.

The accident occurred on the A-52 highway in the Zamorana region of Sanabria, Spain. According to reports, Diogo was driving a Lamborghini when it ran off the road and caught fire. Eyewitnesses reported that the car was immediately engulfed in flames, which also spread to nearby vegetation. Initial investigations suggest that a tire blowout while overtaking another vehicle may have caused the car to leave the road.

The deaths of Diogo and André Jota have resulted in an outpouring of grief from the football world. Tributes have been pouring in from former players, clubs, and sporting figures. Liverpool FC released a statement expressing their devastation at the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother, requesting privacy for their family, friends, teammates, and club staff. The Portuguese Football Federation also expressed their devastation, calling their deaths irreparable losses for Portuguese football.
