Brewers' bats go quiet as Mets secure a narrow 3-2 victory, offense sputters.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the New York Mets by a score of 3-2 on Thursday, July 3rd, 2025, due to an insufficient offensive performance. Despite solid pitching, the Brewers' bats couldn't provide enough support to secure a victory.

Brandon Nimmo homered for the Mets, and Juan Soto delivered a crucial tie-breaking single. David Peterson pitched effectively for 6 2/3 innings, helping the Mets hold off the Brewers.

The Brewers' offense has been a concern throughout the 2025 season. Their struggles to produce runs consistently have hindered their ability to climb to the top of the National League Central. The team's lack of power and quality contact has contributed significantly to their offensive woes. As of May 2025, the Brewers ranked near the bottom of the league in home runs and slugging percentage. Their isolated power (ISO) was also among the lowest, indicating a shortage of extra-base hits and impactful swings. The average exit velocity of their hitters was second from the bottom in MLB, and their expected weighted on-base average on contact (xwOBACON) was the lowest in the league, suggesting that even when they made contact, it lacked authority.

The Brewers' struggles with runners in scoring position (RISP) have also been a factor. Their wRC+ with runners on base dropped from third in MLB in 2024 to 20th in 2025. Their average with RISP has also declined sharply. The bottom of the order was particularly unproductive early in the season, making it difficult to sustain rallies.

In contrast to their 2024 season, the Brewers have struggled to mount comebacks in 2025. As of May, they were 0-13 when their opponents scored first, highlighting a significant decline in their ability to rally and win games.

Milwaukee's batting average on balls in play (BABIP) has also plummeted from .305 in 2024 to .218 in 2025. This sharp drop suggests a decline in the quality of contact and an increase in ground balls, limiting the effectiveness of their team speed.

Several players have struggled to find consistency at the plate. While Sal Frelick, Christian Yelich, Rhys Hoskins, and Jackson Chourio have shown flashes of productivity, others like William Contreras, Joey Ortiz, and Brice Turang have struggled.

The Brewers' offense has been stuck in neutral for much of the season, compiling one of the least productive lineups in baseball. Their OPS (on-base plus slugging) of .676 is among the worst in the National League.

Despite the offensive struggles, the Brewers' pitching staff has been surprisingly successful. However, to make a serious playoff push, the Brewers' offense needs to improve. The National League is highly competitive, and the Brewers must find ways to score more runs to contend.

Looking ahead, the Brewers will need to address their offensive deficiencies to improve their standing in the NL Central. A focus on generating more power, improving contact quality, and capitalizing on opportunities with runners in scoring position will be crucial for their success.
