Shubman Gill experienced an emotional moment after his record-breaking innings of 269 against England in the second Test at Edgbaston. The BCCI captured Gill's reaction to a heartwarming congratulatory voice note from his parents. In the message, Gill's father, Lakhwinder Singh, expressed immense joy and peace of mind ( "dil ko sukoon mileya") watching his son bat, reminiscing about his U-16 and U-19 days and conveyed how proud he felt. Gill's mother added her praise and blessings, urging him to continue his form.

Visibly moved by the message, Gill expressed how much it meant to him, acknowledging his father's pivotal role in his cricket journey. He stated that his father and his best friend are the only two people he listens to when it comes to cricket. In a lighthearted manner, Gill also added that the message reminded him that he had missed his triple century.

Gill's magnificent innings has been widely lauded, with many noting his composure and dominance against the English bowlers. His knock broke several records:

  • Highest score by an Indian Test captain, surpassing Virat Kohli's 254 against South Africa in 2019
  • Highest Test score by an Indian batter in England, exceeding Sunil Gavaskar's 221 at the Oval in 1979
  • First Asian captain to score a double century in a Test match in England
  • Third-highest individual score by an Indian batter away from home

During his innings, Gill had an on-field exchange with England's Harry Brook that went viral. Brook seemingly tried to get into Gill's head with a comment about "290s being the hardest" and asked Gill how many triple centuries he had. Former England captain and commentator Michael Atherton, deciphered the conversation. Atherton also pointed out that Brook has a triple century against Pakistan in 2024. Gill responded to Brook's banter. Shortly after the exchange, Gill was dismissed for 269. Some observers speculated whether Brook's "mind games" had contributed to Gill's dismissal.

Gill's father has been a constant source of support and guidance. Recognizing his son's talent early on, he created an environment that fostered Shubman's cricketing development. He moved his family to Chandigarh to provide better cricketing opportunities for his son. Gill acknowledged that he played almost all of his cricket growing up for his dad.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly praised Gill's innings as an "absolute masterclass" and suggested that No. 4 is his ideal position in Test cricket. Gill's innings helped India reach 587, their highest Test total in England in 35 years.
