Nazem Kadri Trade Buzz: Maple Leafs Speculation and Potential Roster Moves Renewed.

The possibility of Nazem Kadri returning to the Toronto Maple Leafs has recently become a hot topic of discussion among NHL fans and insiders. The rumors gained traction on social media, fueled by speculation and alleged reports of mutual interest between Kadri and the Leafs.

Kadri's connection to Toronto runs deep, as he was drafted by the team in 2009 and played there for ten seasons, becoming a popular figure. Some fans believe the Maple Leafs should not have traded Kadri. He had his best season with the team in 2016-17, amassing 61 points.

Adding fuel to the fire, Kadri himself has hinted at a potential return. In February 2025, he stated, "I mean, who knows? I would definitely not put that out of the equation, for sure," also expressing his love for the city and its fans.

Further stoking the rumors is the connection between Kadri and current Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving. Treliving, who previously served as the General Manager of the Calgary Flames, signed Kadri to a seven-year, $49 million contract in 2022. This pre-existing relationship has led to speculation that Treliving might consider bringing Kadri back to Toronto if a trade were feasible.

However, skepticism surrounds the likelihood of such a trade. NHL insider David Pagnotta doesn't foresee a deal, especially if the Flames aim to stay competitive. Pagnotta notes a potential lack of fit that benefits both teams. The Maple Leafs recently gained cap space by trading Mitch Marner, but using it on Kadri might restrict other potential moves.

Despite the doubts, some suggest how Kadri could fit into the Maple Leafs lineup. NHL insider Spencer Lazary proposed that Kadri could slot in on the second line, potentially shifting John Tavares to the wing or the third-line center position. Lazary also highlighted Kadri's physical playing style, which aligns with the changes General Manager Brad Treliving and new coach Craig Berube want to bring to the team. Treliving stated in May 2025 that the team needs a change in DNA.

Conversely, a source told Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun that Kadri wouldn't let his no-movement clause impede a trade to Toronto. The source added that Kadri isn't actively seeking a trade, enjoys playing in Calgary, and hasn't been asked to waive his NMC.

Financially, Kadri is under contract until 2029, with an annual cap hit of $7 million. Any acquiring team would need to accommodate this figure. With the Maple Leafs lacking a first-round pick for the next two years and limited valuable assets to offer, a trade might be challenging to execute. Names like Max Domi, Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf, or Nick Robertson might not be enough to entice the Flames.
