Filippa Angeldahl's second-half goal secured a 1-0 victory for Sweden against Denmark in their Euro 2025 Group C opener, played in Geneva. The win gives Sweden an early advantage in the tournament.

The match was closely contested, with Denmark proving to be a tough opponent. Angeldahl's decisive goal came after a well-executed one-two play with Kosovare Asllani, who was making her 200th international appearance. Angeldahl's powerful, low shot evaded the Danish goalkeeper, Maja Bay Ostergaard.

Sweden entered the match as favorites, having defeated Denmark twice in the Nations League earlier in the year, including a 6-1 victory in June. However, Denmark, with players like Pernille Harder, aimed to start their tournament with a win. Harder nearly equalized late in the game, but her shot hit the crossbar.

Sweden's coach, Peter Gerhardsson, acknowledged the team's tendency to fall short in past tournaments, having secured an Olympic silver and two World Cup bronze medals. He emphasized that Euro 2025 represents a final opportunity for him and several players to win a European trophy.

The match was played in hot conditions, with temperatures reaching 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), leading to multiple drinks breaks. The game also included a lengthy delay for a video review in the first half.

Sweden has been in impressive form, remaining unbeaten since July 2024. Denmark, who were Euro finalists in 2017 but failed to progress beyond the group stage in the last tournament, hoped to put their recent 6-1 defeat to Sweden behind them.

With the win, Sweden has now won their last three head-to-head matches against Denmark. Sweden is considered a strong team, having reached the semi-finals of the last three major women's tournaments.

Looking ahead, Sweden will aim to build on this victory as they progress through the group stage. Denmark will need to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming matches to keep their Euro 2025 hopes alive.

The match took place at the Stade de Genève in Switzerland.
