Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) commenced their Durand Cup 2025 campaign with a resounding 3-1 victory over Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC) in a high-octane Kolkata Derby at the Salt Lake Stadium. Despite being reduced to 10 men, the Mariners dominated their opponent, showcasing their strength and determination.

Liston Colaco emerged as the star of the match, netting a brace and playing a crucial role in Mohun Bagan's triumph. Colaco's stunning free-kick in the 23rd minute set the tone for the match, giving Mohun Bagan an early lead. However, just before halftime, Apuia received a straight red card, leaving Mohun Bagan with a numerical disadvantage for the entire second half.

Mohammedan SC capitalized on their advantage early in the second half, with Ashley Koli scoring four minutes after the restart, leveling the score. However, Mohun Bagan quickly regained their composure and took the lead again through Suhail Bhat, who scored a fantastic goal. Liston Colaco sealed the victory for Mohun Bagan with a well-taken penalty in the dying moments of the game.

Despite being a man down, Mohun Bagan displayed remarkable control and resilience. They maintained possession and effectively stifled Mohammedan SC's attacks. Mohun Bagan's Anirudh Thapa had a golden opportunity to extend their lead in the first half, but he failed to convert a terrific lobbed pass from Colaco. Mohammedan SC had their chances as well, with Lalthankima testing Mohun Bagan's goalkeeper Vishal Kaith.

With this win, Mohun Bagan have made a strong statement in the Durand Cup 2025. The Mariners, who were runners-up in the previous edition, are aiming for another deep run in the tournament. On the other hand, Mohammedan SC, who suffered a defeat in their opening match against Diamond Harbour FC, are under pressure to bounce back and avoid an early exit.
