Borussia Dortmund has officially announced the signing of 19-year-old English midfielder Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland. The transfer marks a significant move for the young talent, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Jude Bellingham, who previously starred for Dortmund.

Jobe Bellingham's transfer fee is reported to be an initial £27.8 million (€33 million), potentially rising to £32 million (€38 million) with add-ons. This makes him the second-most expensive signing in Dortmund's history, potentially surpassing Ousmane Dembele if all add-ons are met. Sunderland will also receive a 15% sell-on clause from any future transfer of the player.

Bellingham has signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga club, committing his future to Dortmund until June 2030. He is expected to withdraw from the England U21 squad for the European Championships to join Dortmund for the FIFA Club World Cup, with their first game against Fluminense on June 17. He will wear the number 77 shirt.

Dortmund's sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, expressed his delight at securing the transfer, highlighting Bellingham's leadership qualities and potential to improve the team. Kehl stated, "We're pleased that we were able to complete the transfer before the FIFA Club World Cup and that we'll see Jobe in our colors for the first time in the USA. He's at his best and passionate about the task." He further added, "We've known Jobe for several years, and of course we have followed his progress very closely. He has taken another huge step forward in his development over the last year, and even at the age of 19 he has become a real leader. His commanding presence in central midfield is remarkable, and he will improve our team in various systems."

Jobe Bellingham joined Sunderland from Birmingham City in June 2023 and quickly became a key player for the Black Cats. In his debut season, he made 47 appearances and scored seven goals. He played a crucial role in Sunderland's promotion-winning campaign in 2024-25, earning the EFL Championship Young Player of the Season award and a place in the Team of the Season. He made a total of 90 appearances for Sunderland.

Kristjaan Speakman, Sunderland's sporting director, acknowledged Bellingham's exceptional contribution to the club and wished him well for the future. Speakman said, “I had no doubts that Jobe would develop with us at Sunderland. He has an unrelenting commitment to improvement that only the very best possess, and his progression is clear for all to see. Less obvious are the sacrifices and the challenges along the way, and I couldn't be prouder of how he's conducted himself and embraced the Club, the community, and our supporters. He's lived and breathed Sunderland every step of the way."

Bellingham expressed his gratitude to Sunderland fans in a farewell message, saying, "It's time for me to say farewell to all the loyal people of Sunderland, who have powered me through two incredible years in red and white. Your support, on so many occasions, has completely blown me away, especially in the times of adversity, which we pulled through together. You welcomed me with open arms as a kid leaving home for the first time, and I am proud that our relationship has grown to be so strong."

The move to Dortmund presents a new chapter in Jobe Bellingham's career, offering him the opportunity to play in the Bundesliga and compete in the Club World Cup. Like his brother Jude, Jobe is expected to make a significant impact at Dortmund with his talent, passion, and fighting spirit.
