Aiden Markram has revealed that the heartbreak of the T20 World Cup final in 2024 was on his mind during his match-winning innings in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia at Lord's Cricket Ground on June 14, 2025. Markram's stellar performance of 136 in the second innings helped South Africa chase down a target of 282, securing their first ICC title in 27 years and shedding the 'chokers' tag that has haunted them for so long.

Speaking after the momentous victory, Markram admitted that the memory of the T20 World Cup final against India in Barbados, where South Africa fell short by seven runs, served as a significant source of motivation. In that match, Markram, who captained the side, was dismissed for just 4 runs, a moment that left him feeling "hopeless."

"I thought a lot about the T20 World Cup last night and how hopeless I felt sitting on the side after getting out," Markram said. "I was like, I don't want to sit there again. So it gave me a bit of motivation to make sure I stay at the crease if I could." He emphasized that his focus was solely on contributing to the team's victory and not on personal achievements. "But never once thought about the achievements and what would come with it. It was always about just trying to get the job done and trying to win," he added.

Markram's journey in the WTC Final was a story of redemption. After a disappointing duck in the first innings, he rose to the occasion in the second innings, displaying resilience and determination against a formidable Australian attack comprising Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon. His 136 was not only a testament to his skill but also to his mental fortitude, proving his ability to perform under pressure.

His innings was also instrumental in forming a formidable partnership with captain Temba Bavuma, who also played a crucial role with a resilient knock. Markram praised Bavuma's leadership and character. “The connection with Temba was pivotal—his grit gave me freedom, and I think we complemented each other really well,” Markram said. Their partnership, worth 143 runs, was the bedrock of South Africa's chase, neutralizing Australia's bowling threat and bringing composure to the dressing room.

The WTC Final win was particularly significant for South Africa, who have often been labeled as "chokers" due to their history of faltering in crucial moments of ICC tournaments. Markram expressed his relief at finally breaking that jinx. “Would be great to not hear that anymore,” Markram said.

The victory was celebrated wildly by the South African team and fans, with emotional scenes witnessed in the Lord's crowd and back home. The win signifies a new chapter for South African cricket, one where they can finally shake off the baggage of the past and look forward with confidence.

Markram's performance in the WTC Final will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest innings in South African cricket history, a testament to his talent, resilience, and the motivating power of past disappointments.
