The 2025 NHL Entry Draft is rapidly approaching, scheduled to take place on June 27th and 28th at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. With the draft just around the corner, final prospect rankings are being released, offering a glimpse into how teams might be strategizing their selections. This year's draft is considered somewhat unpredictable, especially after the top few picks, making the work of scouts even more crucial in identifying valuable talent.

The New York Islanders secured the coveted first overall pick after winning the draft lottery and are expected to select Matthew Schaefer, a dynamic defenseman from the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Despite his season being shortened by illness and injury, Schaefer has consistently impressed scouts with his all-around game, logging significant ice time and contributing effectively in all situations. He is viewed as a complete player with the potential to become a top-pairing defenseman and a future NHL captain.

Following Schaefer, Michael Misa, a center from the Saginaw Spirit, is widely projected to be the second pick, likely going to the San Jose Sharks. Misa is known for his well-rounded game and impressive goal-scoring ability, making him a highly sought-after prospect.

After the top two, the draft order becomes less clear, with several players vying for the subsequent spots. This is where team preferences and specific needs will likely dictate the selections. Several prospects have made compelling cases for being top-10 picks.

Brady Martin, known for his physicality and strong performance at the U18 World Championship, is a player to watch. Braeden Cootes from the Western Hockey League (WHL) also significantly boosted his stock with a standout performance at the same tournament. Kashawn Aitcheson is another name rapidly climbing the rankings, thanks to his clutch performances and physical style of play.

Injuries could also play a significant role in how the draft unfolds. Carter Bear, who suffered an Achilles injury, and Roger McQueen, recovering from a back injury, might see their draft stock fall due to concerns about their health and readiness.

The first round of the 2025 NHL Draft is scheduled for June 27th at 7 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN+, Sportsnet, and TVA Sports. Rounds 2-7 will follow on June 28th at noon ET, with coverage on NHL Network, ESPN+, Sportsnet, and SN1.
