The Dallas Stars have been actively making roster moves in preparation for the upcoming season, securing two of their young talents with contract extensions. On Friday, June 20, 2025, the Stars announced that they have signed forward Mavrik Bourque and defenseman Nils Lundkvist to one-year contract extensions.

Mavrik Bourque, 23, has signed a one-year deal worth $950,000. Bourque is coming off his first full NHL season, where he played 73 games and recorded 11 goals and 14 assists for a total of 25 points. Drafted by the Stars in the first round (30th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft, Bourque spent time with the Texas Stars in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he shined. In 2023-24, he led the AHL with 77 points in 71 games, becoming the youngest scoring champion in the league since 2012-13. Bourque's strong performance earned him the Les Cunningham Award as the AHL's most valuable player.

Stars General Manager Jim Nill expressed his confidence in Bourque, stating, "Mavrik is a dynamic and highly skilled player whose vision and hockey IQ stand out every time he is on the ice. His ability to create plays and elevate the game is something we value deeply in such a young player. We are excited to have him back and confident he'll continue to make a significant impact for our team."

Nils Lundkvist, 24, has also signed a one-year contract extension with an average annual value of $1.25 million. Lundkvist played 39 games for the Stars in the 2024-25 season, recording five assists. Acquired by the Stars on Sept. 19, 2022, from the New York Rangers, Lundkvist has played a total of 183 NHL games, accumulating 44 points.

"Nils brings a unique combination of offensive ability and defensive reliability to our lineup," said Nill. "His puck-moving skills, vision, and hockey sense are assets that elevate our game in transition. We're thrilled to have him back and excited to see how he continues to grow and contribute to our success.”

These signings come after the Stars extended Matt Duchene's contract for four years and traded Mason Marchment to the Seattle Kraken to create cap space. After locking up Bourque and Lundkvist, the Stars have approximately $2.76 million in cap space remaining with 18 players under contract for the next season.

With these moves, the Dallas Stars are strategically shaping their roster for the upcoming season, balancing the need for experienced players with the potential of their young talents.
