Khalid Jamil's tenure as India's head coach began on a triumphant note as the Blue Tigers secured a 2-1 victory against Tajikistan in their opening match of the CAFA Nations Cup 2025. The match, played at the Hisor Central Stadium in Hisor, Tajikistan, saw India take an early lead courtesy of goals from defenders Anwar Ali and Sandesh Jhingan. Despite a goal from Tajikistan's Samiev, India held on to secure a crucial win, marking their first victory away from home in nearly two years.

India started the match aggressively, catching Tajikistan off guard with long throws. One such long throw from Muhammed Uvais Moyikkal, who was making his international debut, led to the first goal. After a scramble in the box, Anwar Ali headed the ball in, giving India an early lead in the 5th minute. The momentum continued as Sandesh Jhingan doubled the lead in the 13th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Rahul Bheke's header was blocked.

Tajikistan, however, responded in the 23rd minute when Samiev scored, narrowing the deficit. Despite the setback, India maintained their composure. Anwar Ali almost scored again in the 26th minute with a volley that was saved by the Tajik goalkeeper. The first half ended with India leading 2-1.

The second half saw Tajikistan increase the pressure, but India's defense, led by Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, stood firm. Sandhu made several crucial saves, including a penalty stop in the 72nd minute, preserving India's lead. Despite late appeals for another penalty, India managed to hold on for the win.

This victory is significant for several reasons. It marks a positive start for Khalid Jamil's reign as head coach and is India's first win against Tajikistan since March. The win also demonstrates India's defensive strength and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu's importance to the team. The match saw a new-look squad under Sandhu's captaincy, stepping up in the absence of Sunil Chhetri. The win provides a strong foundation for India's campaign in the CAFA Nations Cup 2025.
