In a dramatic turn of events at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Curaçao salvaged a 1-1 draw against Canada in their CONCACAF Gold Cup Group B match on Saturday, June 21, 2025. Substitute Jeremy Antonisse became the hero of the hour, scoring a crucial equalizer in the 94th minute to keep Curaçao's hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive.

The match began with Canada taking an early lead in the 9th minute. A free kick from Jayden Nelson on the left side of the penalty box was headed into the path of Nathan Saliba, who struck a well-timed shot from just inside the box past Curaçao's diving goalkeeper Eloy Room. Saliba's goal was his second in as many games, building on his impressive performance in Canada's 6-0 victory over Honduras in their opening match.

Despite Canada's early advantage, Curaçao proved to be a resilient opponent. They grew into the game, testing Canada's defense with set-pieces and counter-attacks. Dayne St. Clair, Canada's goalkeeper, was called into action in the 18th minute, making a fine reflex save to deny Bacuna's header from a free kick.

The second half saw Curaçao increase their pressure, and they appeared to have found an equalizer in the 66th minute through Jurgen Locadia. Locadia received a backheel pass from Sherel Floranus, swiveled, and fired a shot past St. Clair. However, the celebrations were short-lived as the goal was disallowed after a VAR review for offside. Curaçao continued to press and had another goal disallowed for offside in the 85th minute, adding to their frustration.

Canada, missing key players like Alphonso Davies due to injury and with coach Jesse Marsch serving a suspension, struggled to maintain their dominance. Their starting lineup had limited experience, and they failed to capitalize on their 55% possession in the first half.

As the game entered stoppage time, Curaçao's persistence finally paid off. A Canadian mistake near midfield allowed Antonisse to break through the defense. Antonisse's low shot deflected off Zorhan Bassong, sending the ball over St. Clair and into the net, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Curaçao players and fans.

The draw leaves Canada with four points at the top of Group B, while Curaçao sits in second place with two points. Canada will need to regroup quickly as they face El Salvador in their final group stage match on Tuesday in Houston. Curaçao will also play on Tuesday against Honduras in San Jose, knowing that a win would significantly boost their chances of progressing to the next round.

The result was a disappointing one for Canada, who had won all four of their previous encounters with Curaçao. For Curaçao, the draw represents a hard-earned point and a testament to their fighting spirit. Jeremy Antonisse's late goal has given them renewed hope as they look to make their mark in the Gold Cup.
