Sourav Ganguly has expressed his desire to return to Team India, but this time in a different role: as a coach. In a recent interview, the former captain and BCCI president opened up about his future aspirations and offered his assessment of the current head coach, Gautam Gambhir.

Ganguly, who retired from competitive cricket in 2013, has since held various positions, including commentator, administrator, and mentor. He served as the Team Director at Delhi Capitals for several years and believes his most significant contribution to Indian cricket administration was promoting the women's game. When asked about potentially coaching the Indian team, Ganguly stated that he is open to the possibility. "I'm just 53, so let's see what happens. I'm open to it. We'll see where it goes," he said.

While expressing his interest in coaching, Ganguly also shared his thoughts on Gautam Gambhir's performance as the current head coach. He acknowledged that Gambhir "started off a little slow, losing to Australia and New Zealand," but noted his improvement with the Champions Trophy victory. Ganguly added, "This is going to be a big series (vs England)."

Despite recognizing Gambhir's initial struggles, Ganguly expressed confidence in his former teammate's ability to grow and improve in the role. "I wish him all the best. He's just a year into the job, and this will be an important tour. He struggled a bit in Australia, but just like everyone else, he'll learn, he'll grow, and he'll become better," Ganguly said. He also described Gambhir as "very passionate" and "straightforward," adding that "you get what you see" with him.

Ganguly admitted that he hasn't closely observed Gambhir's coaching strategies, as he hasn't worked with him in that capacity. However, he spoke highly of Gambhir's character and dedication. "I have played with him, and he was a great guy with a lot of respect for me and the seniors, and I see him now he is very passionate about his job," Ganguly remarked.

While Ganguly is open to coaching the Indian team in the future, he firmly dismissed any interest in entering politics. When asked about joining a political party, he stated, "I am not interested." Even when pressed about the possibility of being offered the state chief minister's position, he maintained the same stance.

Ganguly's potential return to Team India as a coach would undoubtedly be a significant development. His experience as a successful captain, administrator, and mentor could bring valuable insights and leadership to the team. However, for now, he remains supportive of Gautam Gambhir and believes he has the potential to become a successful coach with time and experience. The upcoming series against England will be a crucial test for Gambhir, and Ganguly, like many others, will be watching closely.
