The first Test between India and England has reached a thrilling climax, poised for a dramatic Day 5 finish at Headingley, Leeds. Debutant captain Shubman Gill faces a trial by fire as his team looks to defend a target of 371 runs against a determined English side.

England ended Day 4 at 21/0, with openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley tasked with chipping away at the imposing target. They need another 350 runs to win the first Test of the five-match series and take an early lead in the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

India will be relying on their bowlers, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, to make early inroads into the English batting lineup. The pitch at Headingley has offered assistance to both pacers and spinners, with rough patches developing that the Indian spinners will look to exploit. Variable overhead conditions have also influenced the pitch's behavior, with overcast skies providing more zip for the seamers.

Earlier in the Test, Shubman Gill etched his name in history by becoming the fifth Indian captain to score a century on his Test captaincy debut. He joined the ranks of legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Vijay Hazare, and Virat Kohli. Gill's composed innings of 109 not out in the first innings, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal's century, powered India to a strong total on Day 1.

Rishabh Pant also made a significant contribution, scoring a half-century in the first innings and twin centuries in the match. Pant became only the second wicketkeeper in Test history to achieve this feat, joining Andy Flower.

However, India's batting suffered a collapse in the second innings after Rahul (137) and Pant (118) were dismissed, as they were all out for 364 on Day 4. Brydon Carse's sharp delivery uprooted Gill's stumps early on Day 4, adding to the drama.

Adding another layer of complexity, the weather forecast for Day 5 predicts rain, which could play a significant role in the final outcome. There's a considerable chance of showers, especially in the morning, potentially causing delays and impacting playing conditions.

The highest-ever chase in a 5-day Test stands at 359, achieved by England against Australia in 2019, thanks to a sensational innings from Ben Stokes. The stage is set for a captivating Day 5, with India aiming to take a 1-0 lead in the series and England looking to rewrite history with a record-breaking chase at Headingley. The pressure is on debutant captain Shubman Gill to lead his team to victory in this high-stakes encounter.
