Millie Bright, the Chelsea center-back and vice-captain of the England's Lionesses, has withdrawn from consideration for the Euro 2025 squad, citing her physical and mental well-being as the primary reason. This decision marks a significant blow for England as they head into the tournament. Bright, a key figure in England's victorious Euro 2022 campaign and their journey to the 2023 Women's World Cup final, explained that she wasn't able to give 100% mentally or physically.

Bright described this as "one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make". In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, she expressed that while her "pride and ego" urged her to participate, she believed the team and fans deserved more than what she could currently offer. "Right now I am not able to give 100 per cent mentally or physically," she stated, emphasizing that "stepping back is the right timing for my health, my future in the game, and most importantly the team". She added, "Football has given me so much, and representing my country has always been my greatest honour".

The demands of playing at the highest level in both domestic and international football have taken their toll. Since the start of the 2024/25 season, Bright made 36 appearances for Chelsea across various competitions, including the Women's Super League, League Cup, FA Cup, and Champions League. Her consistent presence in the England squad further added to the physical and mental strain.

Following her withdrawal announcement, Chelsea confirmed that Bright underwent minor knee surgery. The club stated that she would begin a rehabilitation period with the support of their medical department. Bright also shared an update on Instagram, describing the surgery as successful and indicating that her "road to recovery begins". She had been struggling with knee issues and had missed the second half of the 2023-24 season due to a recurrence of a previous knee injury. She underwent intensive rehabilitation to play at the 2023 World Cup.

Sarina Wiegman, England's manager, acknowledged Bright's absence with disappointment. While confirming that Bright would have been selected if available, Wiegman also voiced concerns about the increasing demands on top-level players. She suggested that more needs to be done to protect players and prevent similar situations in the future. Wiegman admitted she was unsure if Bright would play for England again.

Bright's withdrawal from Euro 2025 follows the international retirements of Mary Earps and Fran Kirby. These absences present a significant challenge for England as they prepare to defend their European title. England is set to begin their Euro 2025 campaign against France on July 5th, followed by matches against the Netherlands and Wales.

In addition to her health concerns, reports have emerged about Bright's personal life. She has reportedly separated from her fiancé and is now involved with a personal trainer.

Despite the current setback, Bright aims to return to football stronger than ever after a period of rest and recovery. Having extended her contract with Chelsea for another season, she remains focused on her club career and future with England.
