Shubman Gill, the young captain of the Indian cricket team, is facing a defining moment in his nascent leadership career as India trails England 1-2 in the five-match Test series. Former Australian captain Greg Chappell believes that while Gill has shown glimpses of greatness with the bat and leadership potential, his real test starts now. With the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy looming in Manchester on July 23, the pressure is mounting on the 25-year-old to turn the tide.

Gill has been in impressive form, currently leading the run-scoring charts in the series with a staggering 607 runs. His Edgbaston Test performance was particularly remarkable, where he set numerous records, including the highest score by an Indian captain in Tests. Gill's twin centuries powered India to a commanding position, placing him in an elite club of players with centuries in both innings. His aggregate of 430 runs at Edgbaston is the second-highest by any batter in a single Test match, only behind Graham Gooch's 456 against India in 1990.

However, individual brilliance alone won't be enough to secure a series win. Chappell emphasizes the need for Gill to define the kind of team he wants India to be, setting the tone not just with words, but with actions, clarity of purpose, and visible standards. This includes demanding discipline in the field, an area where India cannot afford to slip up. According to Chappell, the best teams are superb in the field, not giving away easy runs or dropping chances.

Team selection and strategy are also crucial. Chappell urges Gill and the selectors to identify a core group of players he trusts, lay out a clear game plan, and communicate individual roles within it. Every player should know what is expected of them and where they fit in, leaving nothing to chance. Ajinkya Rahane has also suggested that India should include an additional bowler in the starting lineup for the fourth Test match. After failing to chase a target of 193 in the third Test, India will be looking to make necessary adjustments to the starting lineup.

The loss in the third Test at Lord's by 22 runs has put India in a precarious position. To keep their hopes of winning the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy alive, the fourth Test in Manchester is a must-win. Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has suggested including Kuldeep Yadav in the team for the fourth Test.

Gill's captaincy is under the microscope, and his ability to inspire and lead the team through this challenging situation will be critical. While he has displayed his batting prowess throughout the series, his true test as a leader begins now.

The India vs England series has been captivating, with several standout performances from both sides. Besides Gill, Rishabh Pant (425 runs) and Ravindra Jadeja (327 runs) are among the top five run-scorers in the series. For England, Jamie Smith has had a dream start to his Test career. The fourth Test promises to be an exciting contest as India looks to level the series and Gill aims to cement his position as a leader.
