Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, is facing significant backlash and consequences in Mexico following recent remarks he made on social media regarding gender roles. The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has fined Hernandez and launched an investigation into his comments, which have been widely criticized as sexist.

Chicharito's controversial statements were posted on his social media accounts, including TikTok and Instagram. In these posts, the 37-year-old striker claimed that women are "failing" and "eradicating masculinity". He further added, "Don't be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man". He also urged women to focus on "nurturing, caregiving, breeding, cleaning, and managing the home," stating that "the home is the most precious place for us men". These remarks have been deemed as promoting "sexist stereotypes" and "media violence" by the FMF, violating their gender and diversity policies.

The FMF, along with Liga MX and Liga MX Femenil, issued a joint statement expressing their condemnation of Hernandez's comments. The Gender and Diversity Commission of the FMF has initiated an investigation to prevent and punish such behavior. In addition to the fine, Hernandez has received a warning, with the understanding that more severe measures will be taken if he repeats such behavior. However, the specific amount of the fine has not been disclosed.

The backlash against Chicharito's remarks has been widespread, drawing criticism from fans, public figures, and even Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum. Sheinbaum, the first woman to hold the presidential office in Mexico, stated that while "Chicharito is a very good football player, but when it comes to his opinion on women... he still has a lot to learn". She described his ideas as "very sexist".

Chivas Guadalajara, Hernandez's current club, has distanced itself from his posts, stating that they were "contrary to the principles and values" of the institution. The club has stated they have taken "appropriate action," though it did not disclose specific disciplinary measures.

Hernandez, Mexico's all-time leading scorer with 52 goals, has yet to issue a public apology for his comments. The controversy comes at a sensitive time in Mexico, as the country is navigating a new chapter in gender politics with the election of its first female president.

Prior to this controversy, Chicharito had a successful career playing for various top European teams, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, and West Ham United. He returned to Mexico in January 2024 to play for his boyhood club, Chivas. His personal life has also faced scrutiny, including his divorce from his ex-wife, Sarah Cohen, in 2021.
