Jake Walman's arrival in Edmonton proved to be a significant boost to the Oilers' blue line during the 2024-25 season. Acquired from the San Jose Sharks at the trade deadline in exchange for Carl Berglund and a conditional 2026 first-round pick, Walman quickly established himself as a key depth piece. This acquisition became particularly crucial when Mattias Ekholm was sidelined with an injury during a significant portion of the playoffs. Without Walman's presence, the Oilers' journey to the Stanley Cup Final might have been significantly hampered.

Throughout the regular season, Walman only played 15 games for the Oilers. Despite the limited sample size, he managed to contribute a goal and seven assists. His underlying numbers showed his offensive capabilities. Following the trade to Edmonton, Walman had an opportunity to play with more skilled players. In his debut game with the Oilers, he delivered a pass to Zach Hyman, who scored on a breakaway.

However, it was in the playoffs where Walman truly shined. He proved his worth with his smooth skating and knack for the offensive zone. Over 22 playoff games, he contributed 10 points. Walman also blocked the most shots per hour on the team, with 8.8.

According to Hockey Viz, Walman's overall contributions exceeded those of a first-pairing defenseman. He drove offence at a rate 13 percent above the league average and his defense was one percent above the league average.

Before being traded to the Oilers, 29-year old Walman had a notable season with the San Jose Sharks, where he recorded 32 points in 50 games. His offensive output with the Sharks was particularly impressive.

Looking ahead, the Oilers will likely try to keep Walman around.
