Al-Ahli Jeddah's star player, Riyad Mahrez, has openly welcomed the possibility of Lionel Messi joining his club. Recent reports suggest that Al-Ahli is actively pursuing the Argentinian superstar, hoping to entice him when his contract with Inter Miami expires in December 2025.

Mahrez, in an interview with French outlet L'Équipe, expressed his excitement about the prospect of playing alongside Messi. He stated that it would be a "massive step" and a "dream for any footballer" to share the field with the Argentinian. Mahrez believes Messi would bring "tremendous value" to both Al-Ahli and the entire Saudi League. He envisions a formidable partnership with Messi, picturing Messi as a playmaker and himself on the wing, creating a "wonderful duo".

The Algerian international also acknowledged the significant progress in Saudi football, praising the investments and strategic vision supported by national initiatives. He emphasized that the league has evolved into a well-structured project attracting top talent, offering them new motivation.

While Mahrez recognizes the growing ambition within the Saudi League, he stopped short of fully agreeing with Cristiano Ronaldo's assessment that it's already among the top leagues in the world. He believes there is still a gap in technical and organizational levels compared to the top European leagues, though he notes that the gap is narrowing. Mahrez himself had a great 2024/25 campaign, netting 17 goals and providing 18 assists in 44 appearances.

Notably, this isn't the first time Mahrez has referenced Messi. In December 2024, when questioned about his form compared to his time at Manchester City, Mahrez responded, "Me, I'm a team player, I'm not Messi. I can't take the ball and go alone. If the team play good, me play good".

The potential arrival of Messi in the Saudi Pro League would undoubtedly reignite his legendary rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently extended his contract with Al Nassr until 2027. It would also see Messi join other high-profile players already at Al-Ahli, such as Roberto Firmino and potentially Ivan Toney.

Adding to this, Mahrez has expressed his comfort and sense of belonging since joining Al-Ahli. He also noted that living in Saudi Arabia aligns closely with his religious beliefs and culture. He appreciates the proximity to mosques and the increased time he can spend with his family due to evening training sessions. Mahrez also praised the Al-Ahli fans for their warm welcome and support.

While Inter Miami is reportedly pushing for an extension of Messi's contract, the player has not yet committed, leaving the door open for Al-Ahli. The Saudi club is reportedly ready to make a strong push to sign Messi when his contract expires in December.
