Konsta Helenius's Impressive Training Camp: Will Sabres' Prospect Crack the Opening Night Lineup?

Konsta Helenius, the Buffalo Sabres' first-round pick (14th overall) in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, is turning heads at training camp and making a strong push to crack the opening night roster. The 19-year-old Finnish forward has impressed with his two-way game, hockey sense, and surprising physicality.

After being drafted, Helenius transitioned to North America, playing last season with the Rochester Americans in the AHL. As an 18-year-old rookie, he recorded 14 goals and 21 assists in 65 games. He continued his strong play in the postseason, adding three goals and three assists in eight Calder Cup Playoff games. According to Elite Prospects, Helenius is a cerebral, two-way center and playmaker.

This preseason, Helenius has showcased his development and ability to compete at the NHL level. In three preseason games, he has tallied a goal and an assist, demonstrating his offensive capabilities. His assist was a "beautiful no-look pass" in a 2-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff praised Helenius' competitive nature and physicality. Ruff noted that Helenius is trying to play with "hardness" and is getting involved physically.

While Helenius has impressed, the path to making the opening night roster isn't guaranteed. The Sabres have a history of rushing prospects, which has drawn criticism. Also, the team had 13 veteran forwards under contract. However, an injury to Jordan Greenway may open up a spot for Helenius.

Even if Helenius doesn't make the initial NHL roster, he has positioned himself as a prime candidate for a call-up from Rochester during the season. Some believe that if Helenius continues his strong performance, he could surpass other prospects like Noah Ostlund and Isak Rosen in the pecking order.

Konsta Helenius has quietly emerged as one of the Sabres' top prospects. He is demonstrating that he is not just competing for a roster spot, but is on the path to becoming a star in the NHL.
