Day 2 of the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi proved disappointing for India, as the nation's athletes failed to secure any medals. This came after a promising start on the opening day, where India clinched three medals, including a gold. Despite the setback, Indian athletes showcased their competitive spirit, achieving personal bests and season-best performances.
In the men's Javelin Throw F57 final, Praveen Kumar finished eighth with a season-best effort of 41.92m, while Hem Chandra ended tenth, setting a personal best of 41.17m. Turkey's Mohammad Khalvandi won gold with a personal best of 53.30m. Uzbekistan's Yorkinbek Odilov won silver with a personal best of 52.06m, and Iran's Amanolah Papi won bronze with a season's best of 51.55m.
Vikas secured sixth place in the men's Long Jump T45/46/47 final with a jump of 6.96m. Ajay Singh finished tenth with a season-best effort of 6.31m in the same event. Cuba's Robiel Yankiel Sol Cervantes won gold with 7.57m.
Rakeshbhai Bhatt and Shreyansh Triverdi finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the Men's 100m T37 final. Bhatt clocked 11.88s, while Triverdi recorded 12.18s. Brazil's Ricardo Gomes de Mendonca won gold with a championship record of 11.16secs.
Following the second day of competition, India stands in 12th position in the overall medal tally, with one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal. Brazil currently leads the medal standings with 10 medals.
The World Para Athletics Championships 2025 is the 12th edition of the event and the largest Para sports event to be held in India. The competition program features 186 medal events and is taking place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi from September 27 to October 5.
