France will be without their captain, Kylian Mbappe, for their upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan due to an ankle injury. The French Football Federation (FFF) made the announcement on Friday, a day after France secured their place in the 2026 World Cup.
The Real Madrid forward, aged 26, reportedly has inflammation in his right ankle. The FFF stated that Mbappe requires further examination and will undergo tests in Madrid. Mbappe played a crucial role in France's qualification, scoring two goals in their 4-0 victory over Ukraine on Thursday. Michael Olise and Hugo Ekitike also contributed to the scoreline in the match against Ukraine.
The match against Ukraine was also significant as it was marked by tributes to the victims of the 2015 Paris attacks. A minute's silence was observed by the spectators to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks.
In addition to Mbappe, coach Didier Deschamps will also be without Eduardo Camavinga due to a hamstring injury and Manu Kone, who is suspended after receiving a booking against Ukraine. Camavinga did not participate in the match against Ukraine.
France's final World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan will take place on Sunday in Baku. Despite already securing qualification, the match still holds importance for France as they aim to finish their qualifying campaign on a high note.
