Dan Burn Hospitalized: Rib Injury Forces Defender Out of Tyne-Wear Derby Aftermath

Sunderland, England – Newcastle United defender Dan Burn was taken to hospital following a rib injury sustained during the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland on Sunday. The incident occurred in the first half of the match at the Stadium of Light, following a collision with Sunderland's Nordi Mukiele.

Burn and Mukiele both challenged for a loose ball, resulting in Mukiele's momentum carrying him into Burn. Burn appeared to take the brunt of the impact on his chest. After receiving initial treatment from the Newcastle physios, Burn returned to the pitch briefly before signaling to the bench that he needed to be substituted. He was replaced by Fabian Schar just before halftime.

Sky Sports News reported that Burn was taken to the hospital in an ambulance after complaining to the bench that he was having problems breathing. He was sent for further treatment and evaluation.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe confirmed Burn's hospitalization after the game, stating that the player had gone for a check-up. The extent of Burn's injury is currently unknown.

The injury to Burn compounds Newcastle's woes, as they already have several players sidelined. The defender's absence will be a significant blow to the team, given his commanding presence and importance to the Magpies' defense.

The Tyne-Wear derby, the first league meeting between Sunderland and Newcastle since March 2016, ended in a 1-0 victory for Sunderland. A bizarre own goal from Newcastle's Nick Woltemade just after the restart decided the match. Despite Newcastle's efforts and substitutions, they were unable to find an equalizer.

The game was a physical encounter, reflecting the intensity of the rivalry between the two North East clubs. Sunderland's victory marked their return to the Premier League and added another chapter to the historic derby.

Sunderland are currently sitting above Newcastle in the Premier League.

Burn's injury is a concern for Newcastle as they look ahead to their upcoming fixtures. The club is awaiting further updates on his condition.
