Penguins squander lead: Mammoth orchestrate stunning overtime rally for dramatic victory.

The Pittsburgh Penguins suffered a heartbreaking defeat at home on Sunday, December 14, 2025, as they surrendered a multi-goal lead to the Utah Mammoth, ultimately falling 5-4 in overtime. This marks the Penguins' fifth straight loss and continues a troubling trend of squandering leads in the third period.

Pittsburgh started strong, with Justin Brazeau scoring just 48 seconds into the game, followed by Bryan Rust's goal to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead after the first period. Ben Kindel extended the lead early in the second, making it 3-0. However, the Mammoth began to claw their way back into the game in the third period.

The Mammoth's comeback began with Nate Schmidt scoring off a rebound just over a minute into the third. Michael Carcone quickly followed up, scoring his first goal at 1:22, banking the puck off of Penguins' rookie goaltender Sergei Murashov, cutting the lead to 3-2. Sean Durzi then tied the game at 3-3 with a shot through traffic at 5:35. The Penguins challenged the play for goaltender interference, but the goal was upheld. Carcone then scored again on the power play, giving the Mammoth a 4-3 lead.

Brazeau scored his second goal of the game at 14:06 of the third period, tying the score at 4-4 and forcing overtime. However, the Penguins' woes continued as Dylan Guenther scored just 42 seconds into overtime, securing the win for the Mammoth. Guenther beat Murashov with a wrist shot from the slot.

The loss highlighted the Penguins' struggles to maintain leads and close out games. This is the second game in a row where the Penguins have surrendered a multi-goal lead in the third period, having lost to the San Jose Sharks in overtime on Saturday after giving up a four-goal lead. They also lost to Anaheim earlier in the week after the Ducks forced overtime with a goal in the last second. The Penguins have now lost six times in 15 games when leading after two periods. Their overtime record now stands at 1-9.

Despite the loss, Kris Letang recorded an assist, passing Hall of Famer Borje Salming for 21st-most points by a defenseman in NHL history. However, Sidney Crosby's four-game point streak came to an end, leaving him two points shy of tying Mario Lemieux's franchise record.

The Penguins will look to turn things around as they close out their five-game homestand against Edmonton on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Mammoth continue their three-game road trip in Boston on Tuesday.
