Player Poll Reveals Front-Runner for Connor McDavid’s Future Team
A recent player poll conducted by The Athletic has ignited speculation about Connor McDavid's future as his current contract with the Edmonton Oilers nears its end in a few years. The poll, which surveyed 120 NHL players, explored a range of opinions on McDavid's long-term prospects and potential destinations should he choose to leave Edmonton.
McDavid, who is 29 years old, signed a two-year, $25 million extension with the Oilers prior to the start of the current season. This move temporarily quelled rumors of an immediate departure, but the question of where he might play when his contract expires remains a hot topic.
Unsurprisingly, the Oilers garnered the majority of the vote in the player poll, with 56.4% of respondents believing McDavid will remain in Edmonton. This reflects a widespread sentiment that McDavid is committed to winning in Edmonton, especially after the team's consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals. Some players feel that McDavid's short-term extension indicates his faith in the Oilers' management and ownership to build a championship-caliber team. One player suggested the contract was a "prove-it" moment for the Oilers' leadership.
However, a significant 43% of players surveyed envision McDavid playing elsewhere in the future. Among the alternative destinations, the Toronto Maple Leafs emerged as a front-runner, capturing 10% of the vote. The idea of McDavid "coming home" to play in Toronto resonated with some players. "I think he's going to find his way home," one player noted, alluding to McDavid's childhood fandom of the Maple Leafs.
The New York Rangers also received a notable share of the vote, at 8.2%, as a potential landing spot for McDavid.
While the poll results offer intriguing insights into the perceptions of McDavid's peers, it's essential to remember that these are just predictions. McDavid's focus remains on the present and his commitment to bringing a Stanley Cup to Edmonton. As one player noted, McDavid "just wants to win there".
The annual NHLPA player poll also covers a variety of other topics, such as the best players at each position, off-ice fashion sense, and potential rule changes. In the most recent poll, Connor McDavid was voted "best overall forward" and "best overall skater" by his peers. Sidney Crosby was chosen as the "most complete player" for the sixth consecutive year.
