Adelaide, Australia – In a significant boost for the home side, Pat Cummins is set to reclaim his captaincy as Australia announces its 15-member squad for the pivotal third Ashes Test against England, commencing on December 17 in Adelaide. Cummins' return comes after a hiatus due to a lumbar back stress injury sustained in July against the West Indies.
Australia currently leads the series 2-0, having secured convincing victories in Perth and Brisbane. The decision to reinstate Cummins underscores Australia's determination to solidify their dominance and clinch the coveted urn.
Cricket Australia's medical and coaching staff have deemed Cummins fit and ready to resume his duties. Coach Andrew McDonald revealed that Cummins' recovery was ahead of schedule, with serious consideration given to his inclusion in the Brisbane Test. However, the team management opted for a cautious approach, ensuring Cummins was fully prepared for the challenges of the Adelaide Test. "We feel as though he'll be as best prepared as can be,” McDonald said. "He was well ahead of where we thought he'd be at and it did create a real live conversation for Brisbane,".
Cummins' inclusion means that fellow seamers Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett are at risk of missing out on the starting XI. Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon is expected to retain his place after surprisingly being left out of the Gabba Test. McDonald emphasized the importance of a balanced attack for Adelaide, suggesting the team would field their best available combination of bowlers.
Usman Khawaja has also retained his place in the squad. Khawaja was unavailable for selection for the Gabba Test due to a back injury. McDonald has suggested Khawaja has flexibility in the batting order.
The return of Cummins not only bolsters Australia's bowling attack but also provides a significant lift in leadership. His presence on the field is expected to further galvanize the team as they aim to secure the Ashes series.
