NHL Trade Buzz: Oilers Exploring Deals, Matthews Speculation in San Jose, Ullmark's Future Uncertain

NHL Rumors: Oilers Exploring Trades, Matthews Speculation, and Ullmark's Absence

As the NHL season progresses, several teams are navigating critical junctures, leading to a flurry of rumors and potential roster changes. Among the most prominent discussions are the Edmonton Oilers' efforts to reshape their forward lineup, speculation surrounding Auston Matthews' future with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the unexpected leave of absence for Ottawa Senators' goaltender Linus Ullmark.

The Edmonton Oilers, after a slow start, are looking to fine-tune their roster as they aim for a deep playoff run. With a healthier lineup, the Oilers are reportedly exploring options to trade one or two forwards to alleviate a saturated core and free up salary cap space. Insiders have named Andrew Mangiapane and Noah Philp as potential trade candidates. Mangiapane, in particular, hasn't quite found his footing in Edmonton after being brought back to Alberta last summer, and the Oilers may be looking for a better fit for the $3.6 million winger. While Mangiapane possesses a no-trade clause, it is believed he would waive it for a more suitable opportunity. Philp, a right-handed center, is also drawing interest from other teams. The Oilers recently traded Stuart Skinner to Pittsburgh for Tristan Jarry.

In Toronto, the Maple Leafs' disappointing season has sparked speculation about the future of their star players, including Auston Matthews. While General Manager Brad Treliving has denied that Matthews has requested a trade and stated he has not approached Matthews about waiving his no-trade clause, analyst Ryan Dixon suggested a blockbuster deal could see Matthews land with the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a package centered around prospect Michael Misa. Matthews is in the second year of a four-year, $53 million deal. Such a move would undoubtedly reshape both franchises, with the Sharks potentially accelerating their rebuild by adding an elite goal scorer like Matthews.

Meanwhile, in Ottawa, the Senators are dealing with an unexpected situation as starting goaltender Linus Ullmark takes a leave of absence for personal reasons. General Manager Steve Staios announced the leave, stating the organization's full support for Ullmark during this time and that they would not be making any further comments. Ullmark's absence leaves a significant void in the Senators' lineup, with backup Leevi Merilainen expected to take on a larger role. This season, Ullmark has a 14-8-5 record, a .881 save percentage, and a 2.95 goals-against average. The Senators acquired Ullmark from Boston in June 2024 and signed him to a four-year, $33 million contract extension.

These developing storylines will be closely monitored as the NHL season continues, with potential trades and roster adjustments likely to have a significant impact on the playoff landscape.
