Sumit Antil has etched his name in the annals of Indian para-athletics by securing his third successive gold medal at the World Para Athletics Championships. The 27-year-old javelin star clinched the F64 class title at the ongoing championships in New Delhi on Tuesday. With this victory, Antil has become India's most successful para-athlete in World Championships, surpassing all previous records.

Antil's gold-winning throw measured an impressive 71.37 meters, which came in his fifth attempt. This distance also broke his own championship record of 70.83m, which he had set in the 2023 edition. Despite missing his own world record by a narrow margin, his performance was enough to secure the top spot on the podium.

The World Para Athletics Championships is being held in New Delhi from September 27 to October 5, 2025. This 12th edition of the event is the largest Para sport event ever held in India and features over 2000 athletes from 104 countries competing in 186 medal events.

Sumit Antil's journey to the top has been marked by consistent performances on the international stage. He is a two-time Paralympic gold medalist, having won the top prize at the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Games. He is also the reigning Asian Para Games champion. In the 2024 Paris Paralympics, Antil defended his gold medal, setting a new Paralympic record with a throw of 70.59m. In 2022, he won gold at the Asian Para Games, setting a para-javelin world record of 73.29m. He also holds the distinction of being a six-time world record holder.

Besides Sumit Antil, Yogesh Kathuniya won a silver medal in the men's F56 discus throw event at the World Para Athletics Championships in Delhi. The 28-year-old Kathuniya's best throw was 42.49m. He has been winning a medal in all four world championships since 2019.

Other Indian athletes have also made their mark at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships. Shailesh Kumar won India's first gold medal in the men's high jump T63 class with an Asian record. Rinku Hooda and Sundar Singh Gurjar won gold and silver, respectively, in the men's javelin throw F46 class. Deepthi Jeevanji won a silver medal in the women's 400m T20 class.

India has sent a strong contingent of 73 para-athletes to the New Delhi meet, which includes 54 men and 19 women. The nation has high hopes for other athletes like Preethi Pal, Praveen Kumar, Dharambir Nain, and Navdeep as well.

Sumit Antil's achievement is a testament to his dedication, hard work, and unwavering spirit. His success will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of para-athletes in India and further boost the growth of para-sports in the country.
