The aftermath of the Asia Cup 2025 final, where India defeated Pakistan, has been marred by a controversy surrounding the trophy presentation, resulting in severe criticism of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi. Naqvi, who also serves as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and Pakistan's interior minister, has been accused of denying the Indian team the opportunity to celebrate their victory with the trophy.

The controversy arose when the Indian team refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, citing political tensions and his social media activity. Naqvi then removed the trophy, leading to the Indian team celebrating without it. This led to a political dispute between the two nations. BCCI officials Ashish Shelar and Rajiv Shukla confronted Naqvi in an ACC meeting for withholding the trophy.

Following the Asia Cup victory, India declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi, due to strained political relations. The team had maintained a no-handshake policy with Pakistani players throughout the tournament. Naqvi then reportedly took the trophy and medals to his hotel room.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia criticized Naqvi's actions, stating that while India had decided not to accept the trophy from the ACC chairman, it did not give him the right to take away the trophy and medals. He deemed the act "extremely unfortunate and unsportsmanlike".

Former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali supported Naqvi's actions and criticized India's decision to boycott the presentation. However, other voices from Pakistan, including Shahid Afridi and Imran Khan, have slammed Naqvi for damaging Pakistan's credibility.

Naqvi has since apologized for the mismanagement and delays during the trophy presentation but has refused to return the trophy to the Indian team. He suggested that the Indian captain could personally collect the trophy from the ACC office in Dubai. The BCCI rejected this demand.

Reports emerged that the BCCI is pushing for Naqvi's impeachment as ACC chief, alleging breaches of conduct and protocol. Sources indicate that the Asia Cup trophy has been handed over to the UAE cricket board.

Amid the controversy, Naqvi has refuted claims that he apologized to the BCCI, stating that he has done nothing wrong. He accused the Indian media of spreading lies and propaganda and stated that he was and still is ready to hand over the trophy and that the Indian team is welcome to collect it from the ACC office.

AB de Villiers has weighed in on the controversy, stating that politics should stay aside from sports. He expressed sadness at the situation and hoped that things would be sorted out in the future.

The incident has further strained cricket relations between India and Pakistan and has overshadowed India's victory in the Asia Cup. The controversy has ensured that Asia Cup 2025 will be remembered as much for its political theatre and governance battles as for India's triumph on the field.
