David Kämpf: Canucks' Underrated Acquisition Set to Become a Key, Steadying Presence on the Ice

The Vancouver Canucks have made a strategic move to bolster their defensive depth by signing veteran center David Kämpf to a one-year contract worth $1.1 million. The deal, announced on Saturday, November 15, 2025, comes on the heels of Kämpf's contract termination with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin highlighted Kämpf's reliability as a two-way center, emphasizing his immediate positive impact on the team's strength and depth. Allvin specifically pointed to Kämpf's faceoff abilities and penalty-killing prowess as key areas where he will contribute. His hockey IQ was also cited as a valuable asset.

Kämpf's agent, JP Barry, revealed that Adam Foote and Patrik Allvin played a significant role in Kämpf's decision to sign with Vancouver, making him feel comfortable with his role and the opportunity within the team. Barry also noted that the Canucks had shown interest in Kämpf in the past, which further influenced his decision.

The signing addresses several pressing needs for the Canucks. The team's penalty kill currently ranks last in the NHL, and Kämpf's expertise in this area is expected to provide an immediate boost. Furthermore, with injuries impacting the forward group, Kämpf's arrival provides stability and allows the Canucks to distribute defensive responsibilities more effectively, potentially freeing up Elias Pettersson for more offensive opportunities.

Prior to joining the Canucks, the 30-year-old Czech native appeared in four games for the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL), recording one assist. During the 2024-25 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kämpf registered 13 points (5 goals, 8 assists) in 59 games. He also played in one postseason game. His 2:02 of shorthanded time-on-ice ranked second among Maple Leafs forwards, and his 51.2 faceoff win percentage ranked third among Maple Leafs players to take at least 150 faceoffs.

Throughout his NHL career, Kämpf has consistently demonstrated his ability to win faceoffs, maintaining a career win percentage of 51.4%. He is particularly strong in the defensive zone, where he has won 50.9% of his faceoffs.

Kampf has played 536 career NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks and Maple Leafs, accumulating 143 points (48 goals, 95 assists) and 114 penalty minutes. He has also participated in 35 playoff games, contributing 7 points (4 goals, 3 assists).

While Kämpf is not known for his offensive output, his defensive acumen, faceoff prowess, and penalty-killing abilities make him a valuable addition to the Canucks. He is expected to provide stability to the bottom-six forward group and contribute to a more reliable defensive structure.

It is anticipated that Kämpf will make his debut with the Vancouver Canucks as early as Monday night against the Florida Panthers.
