Following a dismal performance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, the Gabonese government has taken decisive action by suspending the national team, dismissing the coaching staff, and excluding key players. The announcement, made by the Minister of Sports on national television, comes after Gabon suffered three defeats in as many games, resulting in an early exit from the tournament.
Acting Sports Minister Simplice-Desire Mamboula stated that the decision was made in response to the "Panthers' disgraceful performance". Gabon finished last in their group after losing to Cameroon, Mozambique and Ivory Coast. In their final match against the defending champions, Ivory Coast, Gabon surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2.
The government's drastic measures include the suspension of the national team until further notice, the dissolution of the entire coaching staff, and the exclusion of veteran players Bruno Ecuele Manga and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the former African Footballer of the Year, was absent from the final match against Ivory Coast due to a thigh injury and had returned to his club, Olympique de Marseille, for treatment. He responded to the suspension on social media, expressing his opinion on the team's underlying issues.
The Panthers were coached by former defender Thierry Mouyouma. The Minister of Sport did not mention any interim coach.
The Gabonese government's actions highlight the high expectations placed on national teams and the consequences of failing to meet them. The suspension and overhaul are intended to serve as a wake-up call and a chance to rebuild the team. It remains to be seen how long the suspension will last and what steps will be taken to address the issues that led to Gabon's disappointing performance at the AFCON.
