Liverpool's Winning Streak Ends: Tenacious Leeds United Secures a Hard-Fought Draw at Anfield

Liverpool's winning streak came to an abrupt halt as they were held to a 0-0 draw by a resolute Leeds United side at Anfield on New Year's Day. The result ended Liverpool's 20-match head-to-head scoring streak against Leeds.

Arne Slot made three changes to the Liverpool lineup, restoring Conor Bradley, Andy Robertson, and Dominik Szoboszlai to the starting eleven. Jeremie Frimpong moved into the attack. Liverpool dominated possession, seeing 69% of the ball, and created chances, but lacked the clinical edge to break down Leeds' deep-sitting defense.

Leeds United, managed by Daniel Farke, arrived at Anfield on a run of five matches without a defeat. However, they were without a mainstay in their XI, Joe Rodon, who was ruled out with an ankle problem. Daniel James and Sean Longstaff were also absent. Farke set up his team for control and concentration, even resting Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who had scored seven goals in his previous six matches, at the start of the game.

Liverpool started brightly, creating the clearest chances in the first half, but failed to capitalize. Hugo Ekitike squandered a golden opportunity from six yards out, while Florian Wirtz and Virgil van Dijk also missed chances. Leeds threatened on the counter-attack, and nearly stunned Anfield when Calvert-Lewin chipped the ball over Alisson, only for the offside flag to deny them a goal.

In the second half, Liverpool continued to press for a winner, with Slot bringing on Federico Chiesa and Rio Ngumoha. However, they struggled to break down Leeds' stubborn resistance. Virgil van Dijk had a header go wide. Leeds defended resolutely, with Pascal Struijk putting in an immense performance.

The match ended in a goalless draw, the first of Arne Slot's reign. Liverpool's lack of incisiveness against a deep-lying, organized opponent was a recurring issue. Despite the draw, Liverpool remain in the hunt for a top-four finish, while Leeds United secured a valuable point in their fight to move away from the relegation zone.
