New Jersey Devils 2025-26 Season: An In-Depth Player Preview of Defenseman Dennis Cholowski's Potential Role

Dennis Cholowski enters the 2025-26 season with an opportunity to solidify his role as a dependable depth defenseman for the New Jersey Devils. After a busy 2024-25 season that saw him split time between the New York Islanders and the Devils, the 27-year-old is looking to bring stability and experience to New Jersey's blue line.

Cholowski's journey to the Devils began with a trade from the Islanders in exchange for forward Adam Beckman on March 7, 2025. He then signed a one-year, one-way contract worth $775,000 with New Jersey on Tuesday. He played six regular season games and two Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Devils. Prior to the trade, in 33 games with New York, Cholowski posted three goals and seven assists, along with 30 blocked shots.

Originally drafted by the Detroit Red Wings with the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, Cholowski made his NHL debut on October 4, 2018. Throughout his career, he has played for the Red Wings, Seattle Kraken, Washington Capitals, Islanders, and Devils, accumulating 40 points (13 goals, 27 assists) in 156 NHL games.

Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, Cholowski is likely to serve as a depth defender for the Devils. At 6'2" and 210 lbs, the left-handed defenseman brings size and a veteran presence to the team. He is expected to start the season as the Devils' seventh defenseman.

Cholowski's place on the roster was secured, in part, due to Seamus Casey dealing with a lower-body injury. With training camp wrapping up, Cholowski was included in the group of NHL regulars, suggesting he is part of the Devils' plans for the upcoming season.

While Cholowski may not be a regular in the lineup, his experience and versatility make him a valuable asset to the team. He can provide a steady presence on the ice when called upon. As the Devils aim for a deep playoff run, having reliable depth players like Cholowski will be crucial.
