Mumbai, October 7, 2025 - New Zealand's Matt Henry has downplayed the shock value of his team's recent 3-0 Test series victory over India, stating it was the result of meticulous preparation and confidence gained from prior experiences. Speaking at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards in Mumbai, the pacer reflected on the historic win, which marked New Zealand's first-ever Test series victory in India.

The Black Caps' triumph ended India's decade-long unbeaten run at home, inflicting a painful whitewash on the host nation. This is India's first Test series defeat at home since 2012. The victory was particularly sweet for New Zealand, who had suffered a humbling 2-0 defeat to Sri Lanka in Tests just before the India series.

"I wouldn't say it is a surprise," Henry said, emphasizing the team's readiness for the challenge. He credited their tour of Sri Lanka for providing valuable experience in spin-friendly conditions, helping them develop strategies to both apply pressure on opposing bowling attacks and withstand pressure themselves.

The series saw New Zealand dominate in all aspects of the game. In the first Test in Bengaluru, New Zealand's seamers, including Matt Henry and William O'Rourke, dismantled India for a paltry 46 in the first innings after rain. Henry himself bagged 10 wickets in the two matches he played, boasting an impressive average of just over 15, with his best figures being 5/15. Ajaz Patel (15 wickets) and Mitchell Santner (13 wickets) led the spin attack, outperforming their Indian counterparts and turning India's home advantage on its head.

The second Test in Pune saw Mitchell Santner play a starring role, claiming a total of 13 wickets in the match. His performance, especially in the second innings where he bowled consecutive overs, was instrumental in New Zealand's 113-run victory. This win sealed the series for the Kiwis, sparking celebrations and marking a significant milestone in New Zealand cricket.

The final Test in Mumbai saw New Zealand complete the clean sweep, dismissing India for just 121 to win by 25 runs. Ajaz Patel again starred, taking six wickets and earning the Player of the Match award.

"I mean, to come here and not only win a series but 3-0 is pretty amazing and it was pretty special for New Zealand cricket," Henry acknowledged.

The series also marked the end of an era for India, with veteran players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin retiring from Test cricket. The loss also puts pressure on the team ahead of their series against Australia.

Looking ahead, Matt Henry expressed his excitement for the upcoming white-ball series, which includes three ODIs and five T20Is.
