Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor has expressed her belief that there is more to come from Alyssa Thompson, the club's record-signing, after the 20-year-old scored her first goal for the Blues in a 4-0 victory against Paris FC in the Women's Champions League. Thompson's goal, the team's third, helped secure their first Champions League win of the season.
Thompson, a U.S. international, joined Chelsea from Angel City for a reported fee of around £1 million (approximately $1.35 million). This transfer fee marks a new record for both clubs. Bompastor recognizes Thompson's quality and anticipates a significant impact from her.
Bompastor highlighted Thompson's attributes, stating, "She brings a lot of speed up front, she's a player who is really comfortable on the ball,". She also praised Thompson's ability to take risks, attack defenders in one-on-one situations, and deliver crosses, as well as her finishing ability in the box. "It's really difficult to defend against her" Bompastor added.
Thompson's goal against Paris FC came after Sandy Baltimore's penalty and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's header. Erin Cuthbert added a fourth goal later in the match. Bompastor emphasized the importance of the first goal for a forward or winger, noting its positive impact on confidence.
Bompastor also acknowledged Thompson's work ethic and desire to help the team both in and out of possession, highlighting her willingness to defend. Despite Thompson's promising start, Bompastor believes that the best is yet to come. "We haven't seen yet the best of her, but hopefully we'll see that soon," she stated.
Thompson's arrival at Chelsea adds to an already strong offensive side. Paul Green, head of women's football at Chelsea, described Thompson as a dynamic winger with electric pace, capable of playing on either wing and excelling in one-on-one situations. He expressed excitement about Thompson's further development with Chelsea, as well.
Thompson was unveiled to Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge on September 5, 2025, prior to their WSL match against Manchester City. She made her debut on September 14 in a 3-1 victory against Aston Villa. Before joining Chelsea, Thompson played for Angel City, where she scored 15 goals in 63 appearances. She was the first overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft.
Thompson has also settled into the team quickly, helped by fellow Americans Catarina Macario and Naomi Girma. She feels she is learning a lot and praised her teammates.
Chelsea's Champions League victory against Paris FC followed a disappointing draw with Twente. Bompastor emphasized the importance of maintaining character and focus. "Most important is the character we've shown in the last two games," Bompastor said. She also spoke about being direct and honest with her players, while also protecting them in the media.
