Matthew Schaefer is rapidly establishing himself as a cornerstone of the New York Islanders' defense, exceeding expectations early in his rookie season. The 18-year-old, selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, has not only made the team but is already making NHL history.
Schaefer's impact was immediate. In his NHL debut, he became the youngest defenseman ever to record a point in their first game. He followed that up with a goal in his home opener, making him the third-youngest defenseman in NHL history to score. He also became only the third 18-year-old defenseman to register points in each of his first three games.
As of October 19, 2025, Schaefer has recorded a point in each of his first five games, making him the first defenseman in NHL history to achieve this feat at his age, and the first defenseman chosen first overall to begin his career with a five-game point streak. He is now within one game of tying Marek Zidlicky's record for the longest point streak to start a career by a rookie defenseman, set at six games with Nashville in 2003-04. Before Schaefer, only eight skaters aged 18 or younger had a five-game point streak to begin their careers, and all were forwards.
Beyond the statistics, Schaefer's poise and confidence have impressed coaches and teammates alike. Head Coach Patrick Roy has praised Schaefer's confidence, while defenseman Ryan Pulock noted how his confidence allows him to utilize his skill and skating ability to create offense.
Off the ice, Schaefer is adjusting to NHL life with the help of Islanders alumnus Matt Martin. The recently retired Martin, now a Special Assistant to the General Manager, has welcomed Schaefer into his home, offering a stable family environment. Approximately ten of Schaefer's teammates offered their homes to him. Martin, his wife Sydney Esiason, and their four children are well-known within the Islanders community, and the organization views this arrangement as ideal for Schaefer's continued development. Martin's mentorship is expected to ease Schaefer's transition to the demands of the NHL.
Despite the individual accolades, Schaefer remains focused on team success. He expressed his desire to win with his teammates and continue to progress and work hard. As the Islanders seek their first win of the season, Schaefer's contributions will be crucial.
