BCCI Seeks Clarity and Planning from Gambhir, Agarkar Regarding Kohli and Sharma's Roles: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly set to summon head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar for a crucial meeting to seek "clarity and planning" regarding the future roles of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the One Day International (ODI) format.

The meeting is scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad following the third ODI against South Africa in Visakhapatnam on December 6. According to a report, senior BCCI officials, Gambhir, and Agarkar will attend the meeting to "firm up a plan on Rohit and Kohli's future" in the ODI setup. The discussion aims to provide clarity on what is expected of these veteran players and how the team management views their roles, ensuring they are not left playing with uncertainty.

The need for this meeting arises amidst questions about the aging duo's future, particularly their participation in the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. Both Kohli and Sharma have retired from T20Is and Tests, making them one-format players for the national team. They recently returned to international cricket in the ODI series against Australia after the Champions Trophy 2025 triumph in March. While Rohit Sharma scored 8, 73, and 121 in the three games against Australia, Kohli had two ducks before scoring 74 in the series finale.

A source within the BCCI emphasized the importance of providing clarity to players of Rohit and Kohli's stature. The source noted that while they scored runs in the third ODI against Australia, the series was already lost, and the bowlers had set up the match in the first innings. The source also added that the duo appeared rusty in the first two matches, which is something the team can't afford in every series.

The Indian team management reportedly wants Rohit Sharma to maintain his aggressive style of play, as he appeared more cautious and took longer to settle in Australia. The senior batters are expected to set the tone for younger teammates in the lineup.

This meeting also comes in the wake of criticism directed at Ajit Agarkar following India's recent performances. There are questions being raised about Ajit Agarkar's limited presence at Ranji Trophy matches which has widened the gap between selectors and domestic performers.

The outcome of the meeting is expected to provide a clear roadmap for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's future in ODI cricket, addressing their roles, expectations, and potential backups as the team looks towards the 2027 World Cup.
