Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has addressed the recent controversy sparked by Kobbie Mainoo's brother, Jordan Mainoo-Hames, who wore a "Free Kobbie Mainoo" T-shirt during the team's 4-4 draw against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. The protest was a clear message to Amorim, expressing frustration over the young midfielder's limited playing time this season.
Mainoo, a product of Manchester United's academy since the age of six, has struggled to break into the first team consistently. Despite high expectations and a contract renewal until 2027, the 20-year-old has only accumulated 212 minutes in 11 Premier League appearances this season, without a single start. This lack of opportunity has led to concerns that Mainoo may seek a loan move in January to secure more playing time and improve his chances of representing England at the 2026 World Cup.
Amorim, facing the media ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash against Aston Villa, responded to the situation by asserting that Mainoo's playing opportunities would not be influenced by his brother's actions. He clarified that Mainoo would only play if he is deemed the right player for the match, regardless of family involvement. "No, it won't affect team selection," Amorim stated. "It was not Kobbie who wore the T-shirt. He is going to play if we feel he is the right guy. That is not an issue. I am not going to do something to Kobbie because of someone in his family".
The manager had previously alluded to the situation, stating that "The team comes first". He also added that he would be happy to discuss the matter with Mainoo if the player approached him.
The "Free Kobbie Mainoo" T-shirt protest has amplified the existing scrutiny surrounding Amorim's management of the team and his utilization of academy players. Some fans believe that Mainoo's talent warrants more playing time, and they voiced their support with loud cheers when he was substituted during the Bournemouth match.
Amorim also addressed comments made by captain Bruno Fernandes, who revealed feeling hurt after learning the club was open to selling him last summer. Amorim acknowledged Fernandes's feelings, describing him as a "special character" and an important example within the team. "He said what he is feeling," Amorim said of Fernandes. "We already know the noise, but he talked with the board and I think everything is clear". Amorim further emphasized Fernandes's commitment, stating, "He gives everything and puts everything on the line. We need to step up and also have that feeling. He is a big example in the group".
Manchester United currently sits sixth in the league table, trailing the Champions League spots by two points. As the January transfer window approaches, the spotlight remains on Mainoo's future and whether Amorim will grant him more opportunities to showcase his abilities on the pitch.
