Calgary Flames Weigh Rasmus Andersson Sign-and-Trade Options Amidst Increasing NHL Trade Speculation and Market Activity.

As the NHL trade market experiences a surge in activity, the Calgary Flames are reportedly considering a sign-and-trade involving defenseman Rasmus Andersson. The recent trade of Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks to the Minnesota Wild has intensified speculation surrounding Andersson, with multiple teams expressing interest in acquiring the 29-year-old Swede.

Andersson is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next July and has yet to agree to a contract extension with the Flames. With the Flames potentially shifting towards a seller's position, the expectation is that Andersson will be traded before the NHL's March 6 trade deadline.

TSN insider Pierre LeBrun suggests that the Flames have seen a significant increase in inquiries regarding Andersson. LeBrun raised the possibility of Calgary exploring a sign-and-trade deal, rather than simply trading Andersson as a rental player for the remainder of the season. This approach could allow the Flames to maximize their return while offering a potential contender cost certainty beyond the current season.

A sign-and-trade would likely increase Andersson's value to potential suitors. As a rental player who could leave in July, Andersson's trade value is limited. However, securing him with a contract extension would make him a more valuable asset. Calgary Sun columnist Kent Wilson believes that while the Flames may not receive a return comparable to what the Canucks received for Hughes, they should still command a strong package.

LeBrun also noted that the Toronto Maple Leafs are among the teams Andersson would be willing to sign with, assuming a trade agreement can be reached. Andersson's pre-existing relationship with Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving, who drafted Andersson in 2015 and signed him to his current contract, may be a factor in his willingness to join the team. The Leafs reportedly pursued Andersson at last season's trade deadline and have recently renewed their interest.

However, the Maple Leafs may face challenges in acquiring Andersson due to a lack of sufficient trade assets, such as draft picks and prospects. Other teams are also likely to be in the mix, potentially driving up the price for Andersson.

Another team that has been mentioned as a potential destination for Andersson is the Washington Capitals. A hypothetical trade proposal suggested the Capitals could offer Connor McMichael, their 2026 first-round pick, and Leon Muggli in exchange for Andersson. However, any deal with the Capitals would likely depend on whether they are on Andersson's no-trade list and whether they are willing to offer him a contract extension.

Andersson's current contract has an annual value of $4.55 million. Through 33 games this season, he has recorded seven goals and 22 points, putting him on pace for a career-best season.
