Tempers flared during Napoli's 2-0 victory over AC Milan in the Italian Super Cup semi-final held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, culminating in a heated confrontation between Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay and AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori. The match, which saw Napoli secure a place in the final against either Inter Milan or Bologna, was marred by a late-game clash between the two players.
The incident occurred in the 81st minute following a robust challenge by McTominay that led to a free-kick being awarded. As the ball rolled towards Tomori, the AC Milan defender kicked it back in McTominay's direction, igniting a fiery exchange. The action visibly angered McTominay, prompting him to confront Tomori head-to-head, leading to the referee's intervention. Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca stepped in to restrain McTominay as the situation threatened to escalate. Even Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic rushed to help diffuse the situation. Both McTominay and Tomori received yellow cards for their involvement in the fracas.
Prior to the confrontation, the match had been largely uneventful, with Napoli controlling the game and securing a comfortable lead. David Neres opened the scoring in the 39th minute, tapping in a cross from Rasmus Højlund after Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan only managed to divert the ball into his path. Højlund himself sealed the victory in the 64th minute with a powerful shot from a tight angle, further solidifying Napoli's dominance.
McTominay has been a key figure for Napoli since his move from Manchester United, helping the club secure the Serie A title last season. Højlund also joined McTominay at Napoli this summer.
The Super Cup final will be held on December 22.
