Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Brière has made it clear that highly touted forward Matvei Michkov needs to earn a larger role on the team. Despite flashes of brilliance and high expectations surrounding the 21-year-old Russian winger, Michkov's ice time and overall impact have not consistently met the initial hype.
Michkov, drafted seventh overall by the Flyers in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, signed a three-year entry-level contract with the team. After the termination of his KHL contract, he joined the Flyers with considerable anticipation. In his rookie season, Michkov recorded 26 goals and 37 assists for 63 points in 80 games and was named to the 2025 NHL All-Rookie Team.
However, Michkov's sophomore season has been marked by some inconsistency. While his offensive skills are undeniable, Brière emphasizes that a bigger role isn't simply given; it's earned through consistent performance and a commitment to the team's overall goals.
"Well, you've got to earn it," Brière said when questioned about what Michkov needs to do to get more ice time. "It's like money in the bank... [Coaches] are not coaching one player. They have a full team to coach".
Currently, Michkov is averaging 14:41 of ice time per game, which ranks ninth among Flyers forwards. While he has tallied two goals and seven points in 14 games, he has, at times, been limited to fewer minutes as he works to gain the trust of head coach Rick Tocchet.
Brière pointed to the upcoming offseason as a crucial period for Michkov's development. The GM believes that Michkov has already learned a lot and is confident that he will continue to improve.
The Flyers' management is looking for Michkov to demonstrate a more complete game, including consistent defensive effort and a willingness to contribute in all zones. While his offensive talent is clear, the coaching staff wants to see a greater commitment to the details that contribute to team success.
It remains to be seen how Michkov will respond to this challenge. His talent is undeniable, and his potential to be a game-changing player is evident. However, in order to unlock that potential and secure a larger role with the Flyers, Michkov will need to heed his GM's words and demonstrate that he is willing to "earn it" through consistent hard work and dedication to the team.
