The BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 award ceremony is set to take place tonight, December 18, 2025, at MediaCity in Salford, with the event broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 7pm GMT. Clare Balding, Gabby Logan, and Alex Scott will host the evening. The nominees for the prestigious individual prize were revealed on December 11, 2025, on BBC Breakfast.
The six contenders for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 are Rory McIlroy, Chloe Kelly, Lando Norris, Hannah Hampton, Luke Littler and Ellie Kildunne.
Rory McIlroy entered 2025 with high ambitions and has had a stellar year. Arguably, the highlight of McIlroy's year was his victory at the Masters Tournament in April, which completed his career Grand Slam. He is now the sixth man to achieve this feat in the modern era of golf. McIlroy also won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Players Championship, and the Amgen Irish Open. He also captained and competed for the European Ryder Cup team, leading them to victory on US soil. This Ryder Cup win marked Europe's first away victory since 2012. Rory also secured his 29th PGA Tour victory in 2025, tying the British record. He also secured a seventh Race to Dubai crown. McIlroy is currently the odds-on favorite to win the award.
Chloe Kelly played a crucial role in England's Euro 2025 victory, scoring the decisive penalty in the final against Spain. She also played a pivotal role in Arsenal's Champions League victory. In the Euro 2025 final, Kelly scored a breathtaking penalty with a speed of 110 kilometers per hour.
Lando Norris secured his first Formula One World Drivers' Championship in 2025. Norris won 11 Grands Prix, including the British Grand Prix. He is the 11th British driver to win the Formula One World Championship. Norris also had 16 pole positions, 18 fastest laps and 44 podiums.
Hannah Hampton was instrumental in England's success at the European Championships, saving two penalties in the final. She was named Player of the Match and included in the Team of the Tournament. Hampton also helped Chelsea win the domestic treble and jointly won the WSL Golden Glove.
Luke Littler became the youngest darts player to win the PDC World Darts Championship at 17. He also secured victories in the UK Open, World Matchplay, and World Grand Prix, becoming the youngest ever number one.
Ellie Kildunne was a key player in the Red Roses' Rugby World Cup victory on home soil.
Other awards will be presented tonight, including Young Sports Personality of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, World Sport Star, and the Helen Rollason Award. Thierry Henry will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Voting is open to the public during the awards show on the BBC Sport website.
