Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young Indian cricket sensation, has been hospitalized in Pune following a severe bout of acute gastroenteritis. The illness struck shortly after Mumbai's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Super League match against Rajasthan on Tuesday.
Jaiswal, 23, reportedly experienced stomach cramps during the high-scoring match, where he scored 15 runs off 16 balls in Mumbai's successful chase of 217. However, his discomfort intensified significantly after the game, prompting immediate medical attention. He was then admitted to Aditya Birla Hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad, where doctors diagnosed him with acute gastroenteritis. He underwent a thorough medical evaluation, including ultrasound and CT scans. Jaiswal was administered intravenous medication and has been advised to rest and continue his prescribed treatment.
Reports indicate that Jaiswal has lost a significant amount of weight – approximately 2 kilograms – in just 48 hours due to the illness. Sources suggest that the gastroenteritis may be linked to food poisoning from a Pune hotel.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to release an official statement regarding Jaiswal's health. However, it is expected that further details will be available in the coming days. News of Jaiswal's hospitalization emerged amidst the buzz surrounding the IPL auction in Abu Dhabi.
This health scare comes at an unfortunate time for Jaiswal, who has been in excellent form across all formats of the game. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he scored 145 runs in three matches, boasting an average of 48.33 and a striking strike rate of 168.6. Prior to that, he had a productive ODI series against South Africa earlier this month, where he amassed 156 runs in three matches at an impressive average of 78, including his maiden ODI century.
Jaiswal's illness and the subsequent recovery period will likely sideline him for a week to ten days. This could mean that he will miss the initial matches of Mumbai's campaign in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he was expected to play and potentially open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma. He has been discharged from the hospital and is back in Mumbai.
