Montreal, QC – The Montreal Canadiens are set to introduce their highly touted goaltending prospect, Jacob Fowler, to the NHL stage tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 21-year-old is scheduled to make his debut in Pittsburgh, marking a significant moment for the Canadiens as they evaluate their future goaltending options.
Fowler's debut comes amidst a season of goaltending instability for the Canadiens. After a tough 6-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team has opted to give their top prospect a chance. Along with Fowler, defenseman Adam Engstrom and forward Owen Beck have also been recalled from the Laval Rocket, Montreal's AHL affiliate.
Selected 69th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, Fowler has quickly risen through the ranks, establishing himself as the Canadiens' top goaltending prospect. This season with the Laval Rocket, Fowler has posted a 10-5-0 record with an impressive .919 save percentage and a 2.08 goals-against average in 15 games. His performance in the AHL has fueled anticipation for his NHL arrival.
Prior to turning pro, Fowler honed his skills at Boston College, where he won the Mike Richter Award as the NCAA's top goaltender in the 2024-25 season. He also played a key role in leading the United States to a World Junior Gold Medal and secured a Hockey East title with Boston College.
The decision to start Fowler in his first professional season reflects the Canadiens' urgency to address their goaltending concerns after struggles from Jakub Dobes and Sam Montembeault.
Notably, Canadiens legends such as Carey Price, Ken Dryden, and Patrick Roy also made their first career starts against the Penguins. Now, Fowler hopes to follow in their footsteps and establish himself as a cornerstone for the Canadiens.
The Penguins present a tough challenge for Fowler's debut, ranking ninth in the NHL in scoring with 3.14 goals per game. All eyes will be on Fowler as he faces a skilled Pittsburgh team, offering an early test of his readiness for the NHL.
