The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially responded to the chaotic scenes that unfolded during Lionel Messi's recent visit to Kolkata as part of his GOAT Tour India 2025. The AIFF has distanced itself from the event, stating that no prior clearance was sought from the federation for the event.
The statement released by the AIFF expressed deep concern regarding the mismanagement and security lapses at the Salt Lake Stadium, where thousands of fans gathered to witness Messi's appearance. The federation clarified that it was not involved in the organization, planning, or execution of the event, emphasizing that it was a private event organized by a PR agency.
"The All India Football Federation is deeply concerned by the events that transpired at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan," the AIFF stated. "This was a private event organised by a PR agency. The AIFF was not involved in the organisation, planning, or execution of this event in any capacity". The AIFF further added, "Furthermore, the details of the event were neither communicated to the AIFF nor was any clearance sought from the federation".
The AIFF urged all attendees to cooperate with the relevant authorities and maintain order, stressing that the safety and security of all individuals involved must remain the paramount priority.
Messi's visit to Kolkata, intended as a celebratory occasion, quickly descended into chaos due to poor crowd management and security issues. Overcrowding and a surge of fans led to a premature end to Messi's stadium lap, with some spectators resorting to vandalism and throwing bottles in frustration. Many fans expressed their anger at not being able to get a clear glimpse of the football superstar, who was often surrounded by VIPs and security personnel.
The chaotic scenes have drawn strong reactions from various quarters. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a formal apology to Messi for the mismanagement and promised an inquiry into the incident. West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar confirmed that the main organizer has been detained and assured that the alleged mismanagement will not go unpunished.
The incident has also sparked a wider debate about the state of Indian football. Critics have pointed out that the focus on celebrity visits and grandiose gestures, such as the unveiling of a 70-foot statue of Messi, overshadows the need for investment in grassroots development and the domestic league. The Indian Super League (ISL) is currently struggling to secure sponsors and broadcasters, raising concerns about the future of the sport in the country.
Despite the controversy, Messi is expected to continue his GOAT Tour in India, with the next stop being Hyderabad. Authorities in Hyderabad have assured that adequate security measures will be in place to prevent a repeat of the Kolkata chaos.
