The FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy has arrived in India as part of its global tour, generating excitement among football fans across the nation. The trophy was unveiled in New Delhi on Saturday, January 10, in a ceremony attended by Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, former Brazil international Gilberto Silva, and All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey. This marks the trophy's return to India after 12 years, igniting passion for the sport.
The arrival of the FIFA World Cup trophy in India is a significant event, especially with the FIFA World Cup 2026 fast approaching. The tournament, co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19. This will be the 23rd edition of the quadrennial event.
Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya was present at the unveiling ceremony in New Delhi. AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey emphasized the motivational impact of the trophy's presence in India. He stated that seeing the trophy brings the dream of the World Cup closer to home for a generation of Indian fans, reminding them that the global dream is real and reachable.
FIFA ambassador Gilberto Silva shared his enthusiasm after witnessing the passion for football in India. He expressed his delight in discovering the love for football in India and said that the trophy will inspire youngsters to play more football.
The trophy will be in Delhi for two days before being taken to Guwahati for a day, after which it will leave India. During its global journey, the Trophy will visit 30 FIFA Member Associations (countries) across 75 stops and over 150 tour days, offering fans an incredible opportunity to experience the thrill and connection of football. The original FIFA World Cup Trophy is made of 18-carat solid gold and weighs 6.175 kg.
Kalyan Chaubey also noted the growing football fan base in India, which is now over 100 million strong. He added that the focus remains on strengthening coaching at the grassroots level and creating global exposure for Indian players. The dream is not just to qualify for the World Cup but to compete with confidence on the world stage. He believes that the FIFA trophy tour is not just about celebration but about inspiration, instilling belief in young players when they see the trophy.
