Paul Merson has heavily criticised Chelsea's approach following their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday night. The loss, which resulted in a 4-2 aggregate score, has led to widespread disappointment, with Merson expressing disbelief at the team's performance.

The former Arsenal midfielder, working as a pundit for Sky Sports, didn't hold back his feelings about Chelsea's display. Merson, who grew up a Chelsea supporter, said he was "flabbergasted" by what he witnessed, stating he "couldn't believe" the performance. He questioned the team's lack of urgency and risk-taking, particularly their failure to mount a serious challenge to overturn their first-leg deficit. "I am numb, I am flabbergasted. I can't believe what I have just watched. I honestly can't believe what I have just watched," Merson said.

Merson also said that Chelsea played like a bottom-four team. He highlighted the fact that Chelsea's squad includes World Cup winners, further intensifying his disappointment with their lack of fight and desire. Merson suggested that the players "never had a go" and "went out with a whimper" in the semi-final. He urged the team to show more ambition and passion, stating, "Go out in a blaze of glory, don't go out like that". He added that they played in second gear.

Chelsea struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the game, with Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga only forced into making two simple saves. The only goal of the match came in the 97th minute when Kai Havertz scored for Arsenal, sealing their place in the Carabao Cup final.

Some Chelsea players appeared particularly distraught after the defeat, including defender Wesley Fofana, who was visibly emotional at the final whistle.

Liam Rosenior defended his approach and tactics in the second leg against Arsenal despite the defeat. Rosenior's initial game plan focused on maintaining a tight defense, starting with a back three to limit Arsenal's space. Later in the game, he introduced Estevao and Cole Palmer to inject more attacking impetus into the team. However, this change was not enough to alter the outcome of the match.

Arsenal will now face either Manchester City or Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
