Cole Caufield's second goal of the night, scored with 1:35 remaining in overtime, propelled the Montreal Canadiens to a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night at the Bell Centre. The Canadiens' win, in their home opener, extended their winning streak to three games.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading leads throughout the night. Montreal rookie Ivan Demidov tied the game late in the third period, setting the stage for Caufield's heroics in overtime. Off a drop pass from Lane Hutson, Caufield skated to the side of the net and sent the puck off the shoe of Kraken goaltender, Joey Daccord, and into the net.
Alex Newhook and Kirby Dach also scored for Montreal. Newhook's goal was his first of the season and came in his 300th career NHL game. Alexandre Carrier, who also played in his 300th game, assisted on Newhook's goal. Samuel Montembeault made 18 saves for the Canadiens.
The Kraken's goals came from Jaden Schwartz, Jani Nyman, Jamie Oleksiak, and Jared McCann. McCann also had an assist, extending his goal-scoring streak to three games to start the season. Daccord stopped 17 shots in the losing effort.
The Canadiens' victory was a sweet revenge against the Kraken, who swept the two-game season series last year, including an 8-2 drubbing on Montreal ice last October. The home opener was filled with celebrations, including lengthy ovations for Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis, Demidov, and reigning Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson. Hutson recently signed an eight-year, $70.8 million contract extension.
Caufield has now scored in four straight Canadiens home openers. This win marks the Canadiens' third straight victory and the first of a four-game homestand. The Kraken, on the other hand, suffered their first loss of the season and the first game of a six-game road trip.
